Kids vs. Zombies: A Review of The Last Kids on Earth

By Max Gast, staff writer

The Last Kids on Earth is one of the favorite books I’ve read in the not-graphic-novel side of children’s books. It has everything a children’s book should have: It’s funny, it has an action-packed story and the illustrations are excellent.

It is a series of books actually. They come out every year. The author, Max Brallier, had the perfect idea of a modern-day zombie apocalypse. Douglas Holgate also is a really good artist and no one could illustrate Jack, Quint, Dirk, and June better in my opinion. I like the style that Douglas Holgate uses. It’s like a mix between realistic and cartoony. I also really like the plot that sets up the next four books and more to come. I don’t really know if Max Brallier intended to make his book a series. Even if he didn’t, I probably would still like the first book a lot — series or not.

Basically, there is this 13-year-old kid called Jack Sullivan who has survived the last few weeks in this zombie apocalypse. The book begins at a CVS pharmacy where Jack has to find an eyeglass repair kit with those small screwdrivers. He needs a small screwdriver to fix his walkie-talkie (which he calls a walkie). He needs to fix it so he can get in touch with his best friend Quint. Jack doesn’t really get to know anyone because he is an orphan.

But then, a zombie apocalypse strikes. The first book doesn’t tell you why the zombie apocalypse strikes. Here are some of the challenges he has to overcome: getting through two dozers, trying to find someone, and meeting up with a terrifying enemy.

I like this book a lot and while reading it I really got into the story but sometimes the book throws a lot at you at once. For that reason, I might take down my initial rating just a notch. That doesn’t mean the plot is confusing though. Once you get through all of it you start to realize what is going on. One question of mine that didn’t get answered though is how the zombie apocalypse started. I’m sure that will be answered in the second book, though, and I’m not going to spoil anything, but there are these people that come from another dimension that I predict will tell you how the zombie apocalypse started.

So right now I’m going to give my rating. I would give the book an 8.5 out of 10.  The only reason I knocked it down a bit, is like I said earlier, SOMETIMES. Only sometimes will the book throw a lot at you. Nonetheless, I think Max Brallier is a great author and I would personally like to read a few more of his books. One thing I’d really want is a graphic novel by Douglas Holgate. I think it would be a pretty good book.

Overall, The Last Kids on Earth is an awesome book. In my opinion, you should read it.

2020 Election: The Tea

By Sherlyn Osorio, news editor

With less than a year to go before the next presidential election, a lot of candidates are working hard to become the new face of America and capture the attention, money, and votes of the American public. Here at Bradley Beach Elementary School, students are curious about what exactly is going on with the race.

“There are a lot of new people, especially that dude with the really long name. I really like him,” said Henry Lleyva, an eighth-grader.

Henry was talking about Pete Buttigieg ( pronounced boot-edge-edge). He is running to become the Democratic nominee for the 2020 presidential election. Whoever wins the Democratic party nomination (during a series of primary elections between February and June) will have the opportunity to run against President Donald Trump, who is seeking a second term. (More about that later).

According to a recent Quinnipiac University Poll, the four current frontrunners are former vice president Joe  Biden, Mayor Pete Buttigieg, Senator Elizabeth Warren, and Senator Bernie Sanders. (A poll is a survey of a sample of people who answer questions, sometimes over the telephone.) Read more

From The Fifth Grade Chef: A Quick and Easy After-School Recipe

By Aubrey Maher, staff writer

When you get home from a long day of school, you want to eat a big plate of food. Most of the time when you get home, there is not an adult. Usually, when there is not an adult home you tend to go for the chips. That is not such a good idea. They are not healthy and some contain chemicals like sodium bisulfate, a substance that is also put in toilet cleaners! Now those chips don’t sound so yummy!

In this series of articles, I will give you some quick and healthy after-school alternatives designed for kids who are allowed to cook. If you do not have much experience in the kitchen you should always have adult supervision.

Rice and Beans

The ingredients that you will need are:

  • white rice (pre-made – 2 cups)
  • black beans (canned – 10 ounces)
  • salsa  (you can use any kind of salsa – 1/2 cup)
  • onion powder (1 teaspoon)
  • garlic powder ( 1 tablespoon)
  • vegetable stock (¼ cup)
  • vegetable oil (2 tablespoons)

Put the oil in your pan and put it on medium heat. Then add vegetable stock, onion, and garlic powder while stirring. When it starts to bubble, add salsa and set with a lid for two minutes. Next, add the beans and mix for two minutes. Make rice according to the directions. Add in and mix.  After you mix, let cool. Now you can eat! Enjoy!

Cheer Team Reaches New Heights at MCAL

By Emely Hernandez Aparicio and Emely Herrera Montoya, guest reporters.

“Woohoo!” roared the crowd.

This year’s 2019 Cheerleading Exhibition was a success for the BBES Cheerleaders. This year, only seven schools participated in the MCAL Cheering Exhibition: Antrim, Belmar, Bradley Beach, Brielle, Manasquan High School, Neptune, and St.Catharine’s. We had four captains: Audra Lowe, Alexandra Zarate, Heidi Ruiz, and Roselyn Herrera. It took Mrs. Morder one and a half months to choreograph the dance. Read more

Is TikTok Here to Stay?

By Angelina Cortina

“Hit or miss. I guess they never miss huh?”

TikTok is the new Musical.ly that we all remember from 2014. And if you don’t remember it, here is a little refresher: It is an app that allows you to make short videos, usually weird lip syncs, and other fun things. TikTok bought musically from Lu Yu Yang and Alex Zhu in August first of 2018. ByteDance (the company that owns these apps) merged the two apps but is keeping the Musical.ly layout but the Tik Tok name. Read more
